Gambian Home

for Children with Learning Difficulties

(Hart House)

Children

Started with 2, slowly increasing to 14 now. Short term care: Mondays to Fridays.

5 – 16 years old chronologically; between 2-5 years developmentally.

Additional handicaps: epilepsy, cerebral palsy, arthritis, dumb.

Unable to take in severe/profound children due to financial restraints.

Furthest distance for child to come is 12 kilometres. Family members bring them and collect them.

Children are referred to us by primary/nursery school teachers, families who hear about us, people who have seen the directional signboards.

The director then visits the child’s home for a family interview - application for admission for which a copy of the form is sent to the Social Welfare Department (with whom we have a memorandum of understanding).
